APWA Accreditation Program

PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT EARNS ACCREDITATION

The City of Palm Bay, Fla., Public Works Department has earned accreditation from the American Public Works Association (APWA) after a three-day site visit by public works professionals from across the North America.  The formal award presentation was made by APWA President-Elect, Noel Thompson, at a Palm Bay Council meeting on August 7, 2008.  Mr. Thompson was accompanied by APWA representatives from all over the State of Florida who came in honor of this prestigious accomplishment.

According Public Works Director for the City of Palm Bay, “This was truly a team effort and an amazing experience for all of us.  By documenting and refining our processes to meet national standards, we not only streamlined our delivery of services, but created a means of continuity for the city should disaster ever strike this community.”

The APWA accreditation program recognizes public works agencies that go beyond the requirements of the management practices established nationally in the public works industry.  On a daily basis, accredited agencies meet or exceed standards of performance in areas such as engineering, street/drainage construction and maintenance, surveying, traffic operations, and vehicle maintenance.

“It’s exciting to complete such a detailed review of an agency’s policies and procedures and then recommend them for accreditation,” said Ann Daniels, APWA accreditation director.  “The Palm Bay Public Works Department is to be commended for improving operations to enhance their internal performance and assuring their community they meet or exceed national standards.”

Palm Bay is the 51st agency in North America to achieve APWA accreditation.
