Red Light Signal Cameras
Overview
 The City of Palm Bay is now using red light cameras at intersections in an effort to reduce crashes by ticketing drivers who run red lights. In 2007, red light running led to 154,000 injuries and more than 900 deaths across the United States. Here, in Palm Bay, we had 407 red light violation citations issued last year.
Citations carry a $125 fine per violation. No driver's license or insurance points are assessed. Those who believe they received the citation by mistake have the right to appeal.

- Malabar & San Filippo
Selection of Locations
The City of Palm Bay will install red light cameras at the intersections based on criteria such as:
- History of crashes caused by red light running
- History of red light violations
How the Cameras Work
Red light cameras will help us enforce traffic laws by automatically photographing vehicles whose drivers run red lights. The system continuously monitors the traffic signal, and the camera is triggered by any vehicle entering the intersection after the signal has turned red. Cameras record the date, time of day, time elapsed since the beginning of the red signal, vehicle speed and the vehicle’s license plate.
A red light violation will occur once a vehicle enters into and proceeds through the intersection after the traffic light turns red. The intersection starts at the white stop bar. To protect pedestrians trying to cross the street, drivers turning right on red (when allowed) must come to a complete stop BEHIND THE STOP BAR, not in or after the crosswalk, before proceeding.
Payments
The citation will provide information on how to make a payment.
Options include:
- Credit card payments over the phone to Gatso USA
- Secure web site to make credit card payments
- Check or money order payments to Gatso USA
- The City will only accept cash payments at City Hall
Contesting Citations
Upon receiving the citation in the mail, the citation will provide information on initiating the appeal process by using a secured website. Upon requesting an appeal, the system self-generates a date and time for the hearing with the City of Palm Bay Traffic Magistrate.
Proceeds
Citation revenue is distributed as follows:
- City’s vendor, GATSO USA, receives $30 for each collected fine;
- City will receive funds for the administrative overhead of the program;
- Police Athletic League;
- School Resource Officer program;
- Remaining proceeds will be shared between the Police Department’s Traffic Enforcement program including School Crossing Guards (not to exceed $500,000) and the Public Works Road program.
