Fire Fighters Raise Nearly $2,500 for Red Cross

Post Date:05/10/2017 4:26 PM

Members of the Palm Bay Firefighter’s Community Benevolent were out in April collecting money for the American Red Cross as part of the department’s annual “Boot Drive.”  The weekend long effort took place over April 1st and 2nd, raising nearly $2,500 toward Red Cross relief efforts.  Palm Bay Firefighters were stationed at the local Wal-Mart drawing attention to the cause and encouraging local residents to donate whatever they could.  The collection drive raised a total of $2,382.22 in financial donations that will allow the Red Cross to help people prepare for, respond to and recover from disasters big and small.

"Every little bit helps and this is just another way our crews to work to make a difference," said Fire Safety Advocate Jim Poulos.  "Our residents are always generous and we thank them for contributing to the relief efforts."

Palm Bay Fire-Rescue has also been a partnered with the American Red Cross for the past three years as part of a 5-year Red Cross initiative aiming to reduce the number of fire deaths and injuries in the United States by 25%.  The program provides free smoke alarms to the elderly and those who cannot afford them.  To date, Palm Bay Fire-Rescue and the Red Cross have provided over 1400 free alarms to the residents in 11 mobile home parks in the City of Palm Bay.
